Leonardo Vargas is a contemporary artist based in Strasbourg, France. His artistic practice is rooted in a deep exploration of visual material, focusing on the paradox between the polished, hyper-stylized images of modern media and the raw, unpredictable nature of human experience. Drawing from a wide range of visual sources, including historical archives, art history, fashion photography, and the vast expanses of the internet, Vargas transforms these images through the painting process, creating a dialogue between the image and the human act of painting. His work aims to create a visual experience focused on sensation, transcending the utilitarian nature of the image, and the automatic exercise of daily visual consumption. This ongoing dialogue propels his work into a realm of perpetual becoming, where the image is guided into unpredictable territories, often venturing into the unknown.
Vargas seeks to retrieve a sense of humanity, emotion, and imperfection; that elusive, authentic part of identity that gets lost in the flood of mass-produced, hyper-stylized images we encounter daily within the polished, controlled aesthetics of today’s visual culture.
